For any business to thrive, grow and expand, the business needs clients. The challenge that most small business owners face is not knowing how to get more clients especially if the business owner does not have a proper financial or marketing plan. Fortunately there are three simple ways that small business owners can take to get more clients even if one does not have a marketing/advertising budget. So here are the three ways made easy for you to follow: #1 Go to places where your potential clients are. For example, if your potential clients are stay at home mums, then ask yourself where would stay-at-mums go to socialise? Where would they shop? Where would they normally take their kids? Knowing where they normally are will help you to plan your marketing strategies so that you do not end up advertising in a place there it is inappropriate like a financial market magazine. If you do not have a marketing and advertising budget, then physically getting involved in activities your target clients would be involved in is a good way to be right in the midst of your potential buyers. Just be careful you are not a 'wolf', trying to hard sell your wares. You are simply making use of your social capital here -- i.e. not seeing everyone as a potential buyer but rather seeing everyone as a good friend who would give you good testimonials to other people who may buy your goods or services. #2 Use social media. Use facebook and twitter in much the same way as above, only virtually. But there are a few things NOT to do while using social media. Do not try to advertise your business by posting about it on other people's fan pages (unless you are invited to) -- it is a cheap move and in bad taste and people can smell your desperation. It is like walking into a real physical shop and trying to sell your goods and services in there. Do not post links or comment on someone else's status that are totally irrelevant to the subject at hand. Or worse, post links of your own website! It gives you a bad reputation and you run the risk of being removed from the fan page or being removed as a friend from someone's personal page. Do not simply 'friend request' someone just because you have seen them on your friend's list. Some people are so persistent in sending friend requests to the point of being annoying because they will keep sending a request until you approve it. Their goal is to accumulate as many friends as possible as if their life depends on it. This is purely motivated by an ego trip on cyberspace. Do make friends with like minded people if you have seen them in one of the groups you have joined. Or if a friend recommends you. Good friendship plays an important role in social capital. #3 Write articles and share your knowledge. This is a platform that lets you earn an expert status in your field. Through what you write, you can show that you know your stuff and in this information age, people are hungry for uniquely presented ideas. The beauty of this platform is that you can write specifically for the market you are seeking to serve so you will be reaching out directly to your ideal clients and all you need to do is adjust the content of your articles. The more people know you, the more they will trust you, and the likelihood of them converting to paying clients is higher. If you are on a budget, these three ways will work for you. Try it and let me know your success story soon!
