Could Your Home Benefit From Renewable Energy?

Views : 3        By : Timothy Capper zero times read

Using nature's forces instead of fossil fuels to produce the energy your home requires is both an ecologically intelligent thing to do and a financially prudent action.

While people have tried to generate energy in a variety of ways through the centuries, most modern families simply settle for depending on the electric wires and underground pipes that run past their homes. The power provided by utility companies often comes from coal, natural gas and other polluting sources that may not always be available, however.

The most intelligent ideas for home energy creation involve using renewable natural resources, but these natural forces can be difficult to harness. Experts have been developing ways to exploit the wind and the sun for decades, though, and many methods of harvesting these potential energy sources have been perfected for today's homeowners.

Catching The Wind

In the minds of many consumers, the windmill-powered water wells of the Old West have evolved into massive wind farms with hundreds of turbines generating power to add to the electric grid. They may not be aware that you don't have to have a wind farm in your backyard to harness the incredible power of the wind.

Smaller wind turbines intended to provide renewable energy for only one home are now available and within the budget of many homeowners. While these turbines may not yet be allowed by some homeowners' associations or municipalities, they are increasing in acceptance.

Property owners in rural areas are also finding these modern windmills a great way to go off the grid or at least offset a portion of their electric bills.

Catching The Sun

While there are still those who think solar panels are ugly, aesthetic improvements in the panels and increasing exposure to them by consumers have changed many opinions. The panels are more attractive than they once were and can blend into a variety of situations easily. Also, the desire for energy independence has caused some to reevaluate their opinion of solar energy.

Solar power has been in development for home use longer than modern wind-harnessing devices, and that means solar power cells have developed to a relatively high level. Windmills are simpler devices than these panels, but they also have fewer years of trial and error behind them.

The cost of installing solar panels on a home varies depending on the size of the home and the kind of panels used, but recouping the cost can sometimes take several years. For homes that take the radical step of going off the grid entirely, however, the cost savings can begin immediately since there's never another electric bill.

Choosing The Best

For ecologically conscious homeowners, a combination of wind and solar solutions may be the best idea. For those in neighborhoods with many structures blocking the wind, relying on the sun rather than the wind could be the only choice.

Technology in both wind and solar power generation changes frequently, but good installers and manufacturers can help guide you to the best choice for your home after considering your location, restrictions, budget and home type, among other things.

The decision to go off the grid or to participate in your own power generation is a bold step, but it's a step that more homeowners will have to take if today's ecological and energy problems are to be solved
